Singapore Airlines to Use Aether Fuels' Sustainable Aviation Fue

Singapore Airlines Group has taken a significant step towards enhancing its sustainability efforts by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Aether Fuels, a climate technology firm focused on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

This agreement, announced on February 7, 2025, outlines the SIA Group's intention to procure neat SAF from Aether for an initial period of five years, with an option to extend for an additional five years once Aether's production plants in the United States and Southeast Asia become operational.

The SAF produced by Aether will be derived from waste carbon feedstock using its proprietary Aether Aurora™ technology, which is designed to lower production costs, increase efficiency, and yield higher amounts of SAF compared to traditional methods. This innovative approach aligns with Singapore Airlines' long-term decarbonization goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Lee Wen Fen, Chief Sustainability Officer of Singapore Airlines, emphasized that this partnership is a crucial step in accelerating the adoption of SAF in their flight operations, thereby laying the groundwork for more sustainable air travel.

Aether Fuels, which was established in 2022 and incubated by Xora, a deep tech venture firm backed by Temasek, is set to develop commercial-scale production projects that will produce Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA)-certified SAF.

These projects are expected to achieve a minimum greenhouse gas reduction of 75%, significantly contributing to the aviation industry's sustainability initiatives. Conor Madigan, CEO of Aether Fuels, expressed pride in collaborating with Singapore Airlines, noting that the partnership will enhance their understanding of customer priorities and the SAF market, particularly in Southeast Asia.

This collaboration not only reflects Singapore Airlines' commitment to sustainability but also highlights the supportive environment in Singapore for deep tech innovation, which empowers companies like Aether to tackle global challenges through transformative solutions.

The neat SAF produced will be blended with conventional jet fuel before being supplied to selected airports served by Singapore Airlines and its low-cost subsidiary, Scoot, marking a pivotal move towards greener aviation practices.

Japan Airlines Achieves Historic IATA Certification for Enhanced Aviation Security Management

Japan Airlines (JAL) has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first organization globally to receive the prestigious "Operating (Level 2)" certification under the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Security Management System (SeMS) program. This certification recognizes JAL's exceptional aviation security management practices, marking a significant advancement in the industry.

The SeMS program, designed for airlines, airports, and other aviation entities, aims to modernize security management by shifting from compliance-based approaches to proactive risk identification and mitigation.

JAL's certification highlights its robust risk management systems, which effectively address emerging threats and regulatory changes across various countries. The airline's leadership and clear operational responsibilities were commended, along with its continuous improvement efforts through internal and external audits, incident reviews, and the adoption of industry best practices. These measures have enhanced security quality and fostered trust among customers and partners.

The IATA SeMS program evaluates organizations across three maturity levels. At Level 2, JAL demonstrated comprehensive documentation and consistent application of its security procedures, aligning fully with the SeMS Manual. This achievement positions JAL as a leader in aviation security innovation, setting a benchmark for the industry.

IATA introduced the SeMS Certification Program to address the increasing complexity of aviation security threats. The program provides a structured framework to enhance security performance through dynamic, risk-based solutions. It includes tools such as self-assessments and a SeMS Community for knowledge sharing. Starting in 2025, IATA will also require IOSA-registered airlines to oversee their service providers' compliance with SeMS principles.

JAL plans to build on this success by collaborating with IATA and other stakeholders to further strengthen its security framework. This achievement underscores JAL's commitment to ensuring passenger safety and advancing global aviation security standards.

Emirates Introduces Retrofitted A380s to Manchester and Milan with Premium Economy

Emirates, the world’s largest operator of Airbus A380s, is taking its European operations to new heights by introducing its newly retrofitted A380 aircraft to Manchester and Milan.

These aircraft feature the airline’s latest cabin upgrades, including the much-anticipated Premium Economy class, alongside refreshed interiors across all cabin classes. This move is part of Emirates’ multi-billion-dollar retrofit program aimed at modernizing its fleet and enhancing passenger comfort.

Starting June 6, Emirates will deploy the upgraded A380s on flights EK017 and EK018 between Dubai and Manchester. Following this, the retrofitted aircraft will begin operating on flights EK091 and EK092 to Milan from July 1. The introduction of these aircraft marks a significant milestone for Emirates as it expands its Premium Economy offering to more destinations in Europe.

The airline has already introduced these upgraded A380s on routes to London Heathrow, New York JFK, Sydney, Paris, and Christchurch.

Premium Economy: A New Level of Comfort

The highlight of these retrofitted A380s is the Premium Economy cabin, which offers passengers a unique blend of luxury and affordability. Designed to bridge the gap between Economy and Business Class, Premium Economy features 56 seats arranged in a spacious 2-4-2 configuration.

Each seat is crafted for maximum comfort, offering up to 40 inches of pitch, wider seats with adjustable headrests, and generous recline. Passengers can also enjoy in-seat charging points, a side cocktail table for added convenience, and premium dining options curated exclusively for this class. Complementing the elevated experience are fine beverages such as Chandon Vintage Brut 2016.

Upgrades Across All Cabins

The retrofit program doesn’t stop at Premium Economy—passengers across all cabin classes will benefit from enhanced features. First Class suites on the refurbished A380s offer unmatched privacy with closing doors, virtual windows for middle suites, zero-gravity seats designed for ultimate relaxation, and gourmet dining options served on demand.

Business Class travelers will enjoy lie-flat beds with direct aisle access, updated finishes inspired by luxury automotive interiors, and an onboard lounge where passengers can socialize or relax during their flight.

Economy Class passengers are also in for an improved experience with ergonomically designed seats featuring adjustable headrests and enhanced entertainment systems with larger screens. Across all classes, Emirates’ award-winning inflight entertainment system, ICE (Information, Communication, Entertainment), offers over 5,000 channels of movies, TV shows, music playlists, games, and live sports.

Strategic Expansion

The introduction of these retrofitted A380s to Manchester and Milan is part of Emirates’ broader strategy to meet growing demand for premium travel experiences while maintaining its position as a leader in global aviation. By expanding its Premium Economy offering to new markets, Emirates is catering to passengers who seek elevated comfort without the higher cost associated with Business Class.

Manchester currently enjoys three daily Emirates flights operated by both A380s and Boeing 777s. The addition of the retrofitted A380s will enhance passenger choice on this busy route. Similarly, Milan benefits from multiple daily flights connecting Italy to Dubai’s global hub. With these upgrades in place by mid-2025, passengers traveling from Manchester and Milan will have access to Emirates’ latest cabin features on long-haul journeys to popular destinations such as Sydney, Singapore, Mumbai, Osaka, and Bangkok.

Fleet Modernization Program

Emirates’ retrofit initiative is part of a $2 billion investment aimed at upgrading 120 aircraft in its fleet—comprising both Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s—over the next few years. The program reflects Emirates’ commitment to sustainability by extending the lifecycle of its existing fleet while introducing cutting-edge technologies for improved fuel efficiency and passenger comfort.

Looking Ahead

As Emirates continues to innovate and expand its services globally, the deployment of these retrofitted A380s signals a new era of travel for passengers flying through Manchester and Milan. Whether traveling for business or leisure, passengers can look forward to enjoying world-class amenities that redefine air travel standards.

With its extensive network spanning six continents and connections to over 140 destinations worldwide, Emirates remains dedicated to delivering exceptional travel experiences tailored to diverse customer needs.

This latest development further solidifies Emirates' reputation as an industry leader committed to blending luxury with accessibility while setting benchmarks for innovation in aviation. British Airways Boosts Network: Kuala Lumpur and Tbilisi Join Summer Schedule

British Airways has officially launched its Summer 2025 schedule, reintroducing direct flights to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Tbilisi, Georgia—two destinations that had been absent from its route map for years. The new routes aim to enhance connectivity between the UK and Asia while offering travelers expanded options for leisure and business trips.

Kuala Lumpur: A Gateway to Asia-Pacific

Flights to Kuala Lumpur resumed on April 1, 2025, marking the airline's return to Malaysia after a five-year hiatus. The daily service departs London Heathrow at 9:10 PM local time and arrives at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 5:20 PM the following day. Operated by Boeing 787-900 aircraft, passengers can select from four cabin classes: World Traveller (economy), World Traveller Plus (premium economy), Club World (business), and First.

Return fares start at £574. British Airways has also expanded its codeshare partnership with Malaysia Airlines, enabling seamless connections to over 17 destinations across the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, New Zealand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Tbilisi: Europe Meets Asia

The Georgian capital of Tbilisi returns to British Airways’ route network after a 12-year gap. Flights operate four times weekly from London Heathrow, departing at 9:25 PM local time and arriving at Tbilisi International Airport at 5:30 AM the next day. The service offers two cabin options: Club Europe (business class) and Euro Traveller (economy), with fares starting from £244.

Georgia’s rich cultural heritage, picturesque landscapes, and claim as the birthplace of wine—boasting an 8,000-year-old winemaking tradition—make it a compelling destination for travelers seeking unique experiences.

Expanded Network Highlights

Beyond Kuala Lumpur and Tbilisi, British Airways has increased its flight frequency to Tokyo Haneda Airport, now operating twice daily for a total of 14 weekly flights. These services utilize Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 787-900 aircraft with three cabin options.

Additionally, the airline will launch three new routes to Italy next month: Rimini from London Heathrow (starting May 15), Salerno from London Gatwick (starting May 22), and Olbia from London City Airport (starting May 25). British Airways is also boosting capacity on its Riyadh route, adding over 80,000 seats compared to last year.

Neil Chernoff, Chief Planning and Strategy Officer for British Airways, expressed enthusiasm for the expanded schedule: “We’re delighted to welcome Malaysia and Georgia back to our network… These new routes mean more choice for customers traveling for work or pleasure across Europe, Asia, and beyond.” With these additions, British Airways continues to strengthen its global reach while offering passengers enhanced travel experiences.
