Japan Airlines (JAL) is set to retire its very first Boeing 777-300ER, aircraft JA731J, marking the end of a pivotal era in the airline’s long-haul operations. The historic aircraft will make its final commercial flight today, operating as JL015 from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Tokyo Haneda (HND).
A Two-Decade Legacy
JA731J joined the JAL fleet in June 2004 and quickly became a cornerstone of the airline’s international expansion. Its maiden voyage took off from Tokyo Narita (NRT) to Singapore (SIN) on July 1, 2004.
Over its 20-year career, the aircraft reliably connected Japan to key global destinations, including New York, London, and Los Angeles, helping to solidify JAL’s presence in the trans-Pacific and European markets.

Fleet Modernization: The Airbus A350-1000 Takes Center Stage
JAL currently operates 13 Boeing 777-300ERs, but the fleet is gradually being phased out as the airline transitions to the next generation of long-haul aircraft. Earlier this year, JAL retired the 777-300ER from its Tokyo Haneda to London Heathrow route, with the last flight (JL43) operated by JA739J on January 1, 2025.
The airline is now focusing on the Airbus A350-1000, which offers improved fuel efficiency, quieter cabins, and enhanced passenger amenities. The A350-1000, configured in four classes—6 First, 54 Business, 24 Premium Economy, and 155 Economy—has been designated as JAL’s new international flagship, reflecting the carrier’s commitment to sustainability and passenger comfort.
A Look Back and Forward
The retirement of JA731J not only closes a significant chapter for Japan Airlines but also underscores the airline’s ongoing evolution.
The Boeing 777-300ER, first introduced to replace aging Boeing 747-400s, has been a reliable workhorse for JAL since 2004. As the airline embraces the Airbus A350-1000, passengers can expect a new standard of comfort and efficiency on JAL’s international routes.
Japan Airlines’ fleet modernization signals a new era, but the legacy of the 777-300ER—especially JA731J—will remain a proud part of the airline’s history.
