
Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha has announced a record-breaking year for 2024, achieving significant milestones that underscore its status as a leading global aviation hub. The airport served an impressive 52.7 million passengers, marking a 15% increase compared to 2023. Additionally, aircraft movements rose to 279,000, reflecting a 10% year-on-year growth. The airport also handled 2.6 million tonnes of cargo, which is a 12% increase from the previous year, and managed 41.3 million bags, showcasing a 10% improvement in baggage handling efficiency.
Key Highlights from 2024:
- Passenger Growth: Over 4 million travelers were welcomed each month, with local passenger traffic increasing by 16%, outpacing transfer traffic for the first time. This growth is attributed to Doha's rising appeal as a tourist destination and collaborative efforts with Qatar Tourism to attract charter services.
- Global Connectivity: Hamad International Airport was recognized as the highest-ranked airport in the Middle East for connectivity, according to the Airport Council International’s 2024 report. The airport expanded its network to 197 destinations, with 55 airlines operating from its facilities, including new partnerships with airlines such as China Southern Airlines and Japan Airlines.
- Market Insights: Passenger volumes surged across various markets, with traffic to China increasing by 87%. Emerging Asian markets like Indonesia and Vietnam also showed robust growth, while established European markets experienced double-digit increases.
Hamad Ali Al-Khater, Chief Operating Officer at Hamad International Airport, emphasized the airport's commitment to operational efficiency and innovation, which contributed to its recognition as the Skytrax World’s Best Airport in 2024. He noted that the airport's performance in November and December 2024 surpassed passenger volumes recorded during the FIFA World Cup 2022, highlighting Doha's growing prominence as a travel destination.
As the airport celebrates its 10th anniversary, plans are underway to enhance infrastructure, including the addition of more gates to improve passenger convenience by mid-2025, further solidifying its role in Qatar's economic growth.
